Abstract

Objective. To study the introductive characteristics of the Red White-Belted breed of meat pigs. Methods. The research was conducted at the experimental base of the Institute of Pig Breeding and AIP of the NAAS, on replacement sows of the Red White-Belted, Poltava meat, and Welsh breeds in combination with replacement boars of the Poltava meat and Red White-Belted breeds. For all groups of animals after their transfer to the reproduction unit, the time of the first heat, the duration of the estrous cycle, the duration of the signs of heat, the percentage of productively mated sows, the percentage of productive farrowings from inseminations, the duration of gestation, and the condition of sows were determined. Sows were evaluated for reproductive qualities according to generally accepted indicators. The number and development of teats and their asymmetry were also determined. A comprehensive evaluation of the animals in the experimental groups was carried out using the selection index for reproductive qualities of sows (SIRQS index). Results. It was found that the largest number of animals with fat conditions was among sows of the Red White-Belted breed, which were also characterized by thicker fat compared to the Poltava meat breed, as determined by its live weight of 100 kg (by 12.76 %, p < 0.05) and when transferred to the reproduction unit (by 10.65 %, p < 0.01). In terms of the total number of normally developed teats, Red White-Belted sows were 13.67 % behind Poltava meat sows (p<0.001). In terms of the average weight of one piglet at birth, purebred Red White-Belted sows outperformed Poltava meat sows using the same breeding method by 16.52 % (p < 0.05). No significant differences were found in the other indicators. According to the SIRQS index, differences were found between the groups of animals. The maximum values of the index were established for the combination of Welsh sows with Red White-Belted boars. Conclusions. It was determined that the largest number of animals with fat conditions was among Red White-Belted sows. In terms of the number of normally developed teats, Welsh sows had an advantage (p < 0.001). Sows of different breed combinations were characterized by different levels of productivity in terms of individual reproductive performance indicators. At the same time, a significant difference was found only in the average weight of one piglet at birth – purebred Red White-Belted sows outperformed Poltava meat sows by 16.52 % (p < 0.05) using the same breeding method. According to the SIRQS index, the greatest difference was between sows of the Red White-Belted breed when mated with boars of the same breed and sows of the Welsh breed when mated with boars of the Red White-Belted breed.
