Abstract

The objective of our work was to study the reproductive qualities of sows throughout their working life at different levels of adaptation and other evaluation indices in modern breeding conditions. Methods. Sows of the Large White breed of the DP “DG ‘Elite’ ISА NAAS” of three different lines were evaluated according to the “level of adaptation” (LA) index. The reproductive qualities of the sows were also evaluated according to the reproductive quality index of Berezovsky M. D. and Lomako D. V., the Lasha-Molna reproductive quality index modified by Berezovsky M.D., the comprehensive reproductive quality indicator (CRQI), and selection index for reproductive qualities of sows (SIRQS). Biometric processing of the research results was carried out using standard methods. Results. Analysis of the results showed that sows of the Slavutich line have a slightly longer lifespan from birth to the last weaning of piglets (37.3±3.43 months) compared to the Danny (34.0±1.53) and Weiss (35.7±1.10) lines. The duration of breeding use of sows was almost the same (22.9–23.7 months), but the lines differed in terms of the adaptation index. The Danny line sows with the lowest adaptation index of 14.05±0.97 had the highest reproductive performance (multiparity, litter weight at 60 days, and weight of one piglet). In terms of the percentage of piglets surviving until weaning, the sows of the three lines hardly differed, with a 1.3 % advantage in favor of the Danny line animals. A comparative analysis of the application of a number of evaluation indices of reproductive qualities of sows shows that the highest index is characteristic of sows evaluated using the “complex indicator of reproductive qualities” (p<0.05), taking into account parity, number of piglets, litter weight, and weight of a single piglet at weaning. Determination of the correlative relationships between the productivity of sows in terms of reproductive qualities using various evaluation indices showed that, in general, the correlation between productivity indicators and indices and between the indices themselves varies. The selection index of reproductive qualities of sows has the highest correlation with multiparity, number of piglets, and litter weight at weaning (r=0.72; 0.76; 0.77). Conclusions. An effective method of selecting sows for the breeding nucleus, along with the main selection traits, is the method of evaluating them by the adaptation index. Animals of the Large White breed with an adaptation index of 14.05 ± 0.97 points and less are distinguished by higher reproductive traits such as multiparity, litter weight, and weight of one piglet at weaning at 60 days of age. Among the various reproductive indices, the selection index for reproductive qualities of sows has the highest correlation with multiparity, number of piglets, and litter weight at weaning (r=0.72; 0.76; 0.77). Therefore, to improve these trates, sows should be evaluated using this index. To evaluate litter weight and a single piglet at weaning, we recommend using the reproductive quality index according to Berezovsky M.D. and Lomako D.V. based on the highest values of paired correlation coefficients (r=0.75 and 0.58, respectively) between these indicators compared to other indices.
