Abstract

Objective. To study the phenotypic consolidation and variability of reproductive ability indexes of two-breed sows for the combination with Duroc boars. Methods. The research was conducted on the basis of the pig farm of the private enterprise “Skrypnyk V.O.” in the Lozov district of the Kharkiv region according to the general principles of conducting research. Four groups of two-breed sows were formed from the combination of the breeds Welsh (W) x Poltava Meat (PM) (group I), PM x W (group II), W x Large White (LW) (group III), PM x LW (group IV) with 15 heads each. The sows of these four groups were combined with Duroc boars. Taking into account the percentage of fertile sows available on the farm, a larger number of sows were selected for research, with the subsequent formation of groups from the first 15 heads with confirmed fertility on the 28th day after insemination using an ultrasonic device for diagnosing sow fertility. All sows were artificially inseminated in one period, had a standardized dose of appropriate compound feeds according to physiological periods. All compound feeds were fed in dry form with free access to water. Sows were housed individually during different physiological periods with observance of appropriate temperature regimes, etc. The main indexes of the reproductive ability of sows were evaluated (number of piglets at birth, total, live, litter weight at weaning and average weight of one piglet). Based on the obtained absolute indexes, phenotypic consolidation coefficients (K1 and K2) were calculated for each individual group according to the method of Yu. P. Polupan. Microsoft Excel was used for statistical analysis of data. Biometric processing of the obtained data was carried out according to generally accepted methods. Results. The results of our studies determined the heterogeneity of indexes that reflect the phenotypic consolidation of indexes of reproductive ability of sows of different combinations. Such indexes as the number of piglets at birth, including live ones, and the litter weight at weaning had negative values of the coefficients of phenotypic consolidation for all combinations. At the same time, the least consolidated group of animals was the III group in terms of the number of piglets at birth, including live ones, and the II group in terms of the litter weight at weaning. The average mass of one piglet at weaning, on the contrary, was marked by opposite values of the phenotypic consolidation coefficients. Thus, sows of different combinations had positive values of the K1 coefficient, which ranged from +1.888 to +2.304 units, and the K2 coefficient ranged from -1.069 to -0.568 units, i.e. had negative values. According to the index of the average weight of one piglet at weaning, the best consolidation can be noted for group III, and group II, on the contrary, was the least consolidated. In order to assess the variability of each of the estimated indexes of different variants of breed combinations, coefficients of variation were calculated. The highest value of the coefficient of variation was for group III according to the index of the number of total piglets at birth, it should also be noted that for this index and the number of live piglets at birth, sows had the highest values of the coefficients of variation but were within the average variability, i.e. Cv=10–20 %. And according to the indexes of the litter weight at weaning and the average mass of one piglet at weaning, the values of the coefficients of variation were less than 10 %, that is, they had low variability. In addition, according to the index of the average mass of one piglet at weaning, the sows had the lowest values of the coefficients of variation, from 3.57 – group III to 5.70 – group II, respectively, they were the most consolidated, which is confirmed by the obtained data of calculations of the coefficients of phenotypic consolidation. Conclusions. As a result of the study, it was found that the number of piglets at birth, including live births, and the litter weight at weaning had negative values of the phenotypic consolidation coefficients for all combinations. The average mass of one piglet at weaning was characterized by opposite values of the phenotypic consolidation coefficients, so, sows of different combinations had positive values of the K1 coefficient, and the K2 coefficient had negative values. The calculation of the coefficient of variation also confirmed the high consolidation of the average mass of one piglet at weaning.
