Institute of Pig Breeding and Agro-Industrial Production of NAAS

The Institute of Pig Breeding and Agro-Industrial Production of NAAS is a research institution that comprehensively deals with the following issues: development of technology, design, economic analysis and forecasting of financial consequences of the work of farms producing pig products; creation of new and reconstruction of existing pig enterprises; improvement of existing and creation of new factory structures in pig breeds and their crosses; determination of the selection and genetic situation in pig herds and development of prospective breeding plans (with scientific support); establishment of the genetic origin of animals and their inheritance of economically useful traits; use of modern methods of feeding pigs; solving problems of artificial insemination, zootechnical analysis of feed ingredients, quality of meat and lard; detection and treatment of infectious and invasive animal diseases; organization of exhibitions and publishing activities.
According to its organizational structure, the institute has one administrative and management department, which includes the economics, accounting and reporting sector and 8 laboratories:
- laboratory of pig breeding and selection;
- laboratory of genetics;
- laboratory of feeding, physiology and animal health;
- laboratory of scientific research on intellectual property and marketing of innovations;
- laboratory of innovative technologies and experimental livestock facilities;
- laboratory of environmental safety in livestock farming;
- laboratory of dairy cattle breeding;
- scientific and production laboratory.
The institute is subordinate to the Poltava State Agricultural Research Station named after M. I. Vavilov and one state enterprise:
- State Enterprise “Research Farm “Stepne” of the Institute of Pig Breeding and Agro-Industrial Production of the NAAS”.
Under the methodological guidance of the institute's scientists and with their direct participation, domestic pig breeds were bred: Myrhorod, Poltava meat, Ukrainian meat, red white-belt, large white of Ukrainian selection, and a significant number of scientific developments in pig breeding were carried out, the novelty of which is confirmed by more than 310 patents for inventions and utility models and copyright certificates.
The main areas of further activity of the institute are: improving existing pig genotypes, searching for the most effective types (lines) and methods of reproduction; using genetic, physiological, and biochemical factors to increase animal productivity; solving problems of feed production, animal husbandry and feeding; developing modern technological solutions, computer programs, and environmentally friendly technologies; training of scientific personnel, promotion of scientific achievements and best practices.
Scientists of the institute provide methodological consultations on issues of breeding, herd reproduction, animal feeding and keeping, reconstruction and construction of pig farms, business planning, problems of veterinary support, management of the crop sector. In matters of educational activities, the institution organizes and conducts international scientific and practical conferences, seminars, round tables, field days, etc. The institute is the coordinator of scientific research on issues of breeding, feeding, technology of reproduction and keeping pigs, as well as the main breeding and genetic center of the pig sector in the country.
